Recently, I was on the phone with a friend of mine and we were just shootin the shit and our convo took a fun turn and we were like “okay, if you could describe your personality using three television characters, who would you choose?” I honestly can’t remember if this was part of a game like Answer the Internet, and one of us was reading off of a card, or if it was just random chit chat but I immediately had my answer. I was like “oh that’s easy! Blair Waldorf, Caroline Forbes, and Jenny MacArthur.” My friend knew the first two but didn’t know the third. Once I explained who Jenny MacArthur was, she was like “actually those three are actually accurate.”
It also made me ponder the similarities and differences between those characters and why I resonated with all three enough to throw them down as my personality as told by tv characters.
Which then got me thinking about how diverse my tv viewing choices really are. Like, I always get a kick out of the “continue watching” and “suggested for you” sections on my Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and Disney+. Between my go to re-watch shows (and movies but to go through those will make this post too long), a random onlooker would think that at least two separate and individual people watch on the one profile. But nope, it’s just me and I love a diverse grouping of tv shows. Hell, I already wrote a farewell post to Hawaii Five-0…
Just with tv shows, I have a solid list that I cycle through for a re-watch. It’s probably longer than most and *spoiler alert* lacks The Office, but it’s my list. Some of them are strictly reserved as the bedtime show, others serve the purpose of background noise when I need to focus on something else, and about half few fall under both(*) categories. The overall list is as follows:
· Gossip Girl
· Sons of Anarchy
· Supernatural*
· Hawaii Five-0*
· Burn Notice*
· White Collar*
· The Vampire Diaries
· The League
After making this list and then going back with the * to designate the both category, I legit just realized that the shows I tend to fall asleep to are all fairly procedural shows. Well Supernatural was sort of procedural, then it wasn’t, then it was again briefly, then it wasn’t again… But hey it’s been on air for 15 years and is a solid comfort blanket kind of show. And to those people who write it off because of its title or think it’s just a show about supernatural creatures, which don’t get me wrong, there are a crap ton of them, you are seriously missing out on a great story about love, brotherhood, and what it means to be family.
Also, I realize that Sons of Anarchy might seem to be bit of a darker show/outlier but like it’s really not… The true outlier is The League (since its a comedy and about friends in a fantasy football league)... Like with SOA, what’s the difference between Jax, Gemma, Clay, Tig, Chibs, or Juice killing someone to protect the club and their family and TVD where Stefan, Elena, Caroline, Bonnie, Matt, Tyler, or Damon doing the exact same thing? Is it because one show is based in a reality similar to what could happen in the regular everyday world and the other is set in a reality with magic and vampires and werewolves? Yes, there are other plot points that separate the shows but at the end of the day they are both dramas with a lot of death and murder.
Maybe working this all out made me realize that, at least to me, my tv show choices aren’t really a random grouping of shows. Actually, it’s more like I know what I like and I know some shows I will have to defend more than others. But whatever. These are all solid re-watchable shows. ✌
